Black is a tough color – you have to use a lot of dye and when tub dyeing, use extra salt. Do NOT try to use Fiber Reactive Procion Dye to get black on silk, use acid dye on wool and silk for solid black. Exception – try our NEW #275 Hot Black!
What can you dye yarn with?
Kool-Aid, Easter Egg Dyes or plain Food Coloring work great for dyeing yarn! Food Colors are cheap, easy to come by and you don’t need any special pots and pans which makes them a good choice for the beginning yarn dyer.
What is a natural black dye?
A deep, black dye can be created using water, tannins, and iron. Any natural material can be colored a black tone by first soaking the item in a tannic acid solution. Then the material is immersed in a second solution of iron salt to give it the permanent dark pigment.
Can you dye clothes with black dye?
No. Hair dye needs the developer. In addition, unless you are willing to risk ruining the fabric, you should just spend a few dollars and get some fabric dye. They typically sell RIT dye in larger grocery stores, Walmart, fabric and craft stores like Michaels, JoAnn Fabrics and Hobby Lobby.
Can you dye cotton with food Colouring?
Never try to dye cotton with food coloring. Food coloring, such as Kool-aid drink mix, Wilton cake dye, or Easter egg dye, works well to dye wool, but cannot be turned into a good dye for cotton. It will just wash out, leaving at most an ugly stain.
